X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, is rolling out a subscription plan in New Zealand and the Philippines, charging new web users $1 annually as part of their “Not A Bot” program.
This move aims to combat spam, manipulation, and bot activity on the platform.
New users in these countries will also need to verify their accounts with a phone number.

While X’s announcement specifies web users, it doesn’t clarify why this subscription is exclusive to web and not the mobile app, or why this program is limited to two countries – or whether it will be official and expanded globally.
It’s possible that X has observed higher bot activity on the web, making it a priority for intervention.
Users who opt out of subscribing will have limited actions, like viewing posts and videos.
