Meta has acquired the Threads.com domain, as indicated by updated Whois records on September 24.
Domain forums noted the transfer and TechCrunch confirmed that Meta’s Instagram is now listed as the registrant of Threads.com.
When Meta launched its Threads social network, it used the Threads.net URL because Threads.com was owned by a startup backed by Sequoia.
That startup was later acquired by Shopify for an undisclosed amount.
Initially, they had declined acquisition offers, but this time they decided to sell, citing a desire to avoid the lengthy rebranding process amidst rapid technological advancements.
TechCrunch has reached out to Meta to inquire about potential plans to move its Threads platform to the newly acquired domain, but the company has yet to respond.
