Spotify has confirmed to Billboard that it is currently in the testing phase of a paid lyrics feature designed for its free users.
The streaming service shared in a statement that the lyrics paywall is presently undergoing trials among a select group of its free users.
A representative explained,
At Spotify, we routinely conduct various tests, and some of these tests may influence our broader user experience, while others primarily serve as valuable learning experiences.
As part of our standard practices, we are currently conducting tests in a limited capacity within a couple of markets.
Currently, we do not have any additional information to disclose.”
Nevertheless, Billboard reports that some Reddit and Twitter users have criticized this feature as “‘ableist’ against the deaf community,” as it appears to require payment.
The ultimate decision on whether Spotify will introduce the lyrics paywall for all of its free users remains uncertain at this time.
