South African sensation Tyla celebrated a milestone moment at the 2024 MTV VMAs on September 11, winning Best Afrobeats for her viral hit “Water.”
Proudly representing African music on a global stage, Tyla used her acceptance speech to highlight the diversity of African sound beyond just Afrobeats.
After playfully asking the presenters to hold her award, joking that she “wasn’t strong enough”,
Tyla expressed gratitude for the worldwide success of “Water.”
Tyla was up against Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Tems, and Pheelz in the ‘Best Afrobeats’ category.
The global impact of ‘Water’ proves that African music can be pop too.”
She went on to address the tendency to group all African artists under Afrobeats, saying,
Even though Afrobeats has opened so many doors,
African music is so much more—it’s diverse and goes beyond just one genre.”
