NASA to Establish First-Ever Lunar Time Zone by 2026
NASA has announced plans to establish a time zone for the Moon, known as Coordinated Lunar Time (LTC).
Similar to Earth’s Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), LTC will be based on a weighted average of atomic clocks positioned on the Moon,
though their exact placements are still under consideration.
The clocks will tick slightly faster by microseconds due to space conditions, but even these small time differences matter in space travel.
This initiative, led by NASA’s Space Communication and Navigation (SCaN) program, is expected to enhance future lunar missions and help build a scalable lunar ecosystem.
The project is slated for completion by 2026 under White House direction.
