A man, aged 36, who willingly underwent a vasectomy in 2022, has been left astonished by the news of his wife’s pregnancy.
In an interview with Citizen TV, the man, hailing from Kakamega, Kenya, shared that he and his wife had decided to opt for a vasectomy after having three children.
He took the responsibility of family planning upon himself, feeling that women often bear the burden disproportionately.
After three children, we were content without having more. In fact, we initially wanted two, but during the COVID-19 pandemic, another child came along.
We discussed it together and thought it would be wise to pursue a method of contraception.”
As men, we often say that family planning is primarily the concern of women, and we tell them to make decisions about the method they want to use.”
Consequently, he underwent a permanent vasectomy procedure in July of the previous year, with the doctor informing him that he would be safe after 20 ejaculations or three months. They believed they were safe until the tenth month.
However, in October, he noticed that his wife had missed her period.
Perplexed, he asked her about it,
I haven’t seen it this time. What’s going on?”
His wife brushed it off, suggesting it might be due to irregular periods resulting from previous pregnancies. In December, they consulted a doctor to determine if she was pregnant.
To their surprise, the test results came back positive.
The situation created tremendous stress for the family. Seeking an explanation, they spoke to doctors who suggested two possibilities.
One was that some sperm might have remained after the surgery, and the other was that the vasectomy procedure had failed.
Now, the husband has been advised to undergo a sperm count, as his wife is expected to deliver in June. The couple now faces an unexpected turn of events, navigating the challenges and uncertainties surrounding the situation.
