Lupita Nyong’o has addressed the speculation surrounding her rumored romantic relationship with Janelle Monáe.
The actress and the singer have been friends since their meeting at the Met Gala in 2014, a time when Nyong’o was still new to the entertainment industry and had recently won an Oscar for her role in “12 Years a Slave.”
In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Nyong’o has acknowledged why people might believe there was more to their relationship. She has described the world of fame as still being incredibly new and surreal to her.
Janelle came up to me and just gave me the realest hug, I think we may have swayed to the music.
She was just like, ‘I’m so proud of you, and just thank you for being you.’”
Nyong’o recounted a heartfelt moment with Monáe at the Met Gala, where they shared a genuine hug and expressed their admiration for each other.
She recognized Monáe’s magnetic presence and enigmatic nature that could have fueled the speculation about their past romance.
She has magnetism that they were obviously picking up on, She is that enigmatic.
I was not surprised. And I don’t mind being associated with her in any capacity.”
Nyong’o has clarified that they are just close friends, and she doesn’t mind being associated with Monáe in any capacity.

Monáe’s upcoming album, “The Age of Pleasure,” is scheduled to be released on June 9.
