Obesity rates on the rise among Kenyan adults, especially affluent women
According to the recently released Kenya Demographic Data (2022), the prevalence of obesity is increasing in Kenya, particularly among affluent women.
The survey revealed that 19% of men and 45% of women between the ages of 20 and 49 are reported to be obese.
The study also highlighted a significant disparity in obesity rates based on educational background.

Among women aged 20 to 49, 50% with at least a secondary education were classified as either obese or overweight, compared to 26% of women without any education.
Felix Odero, a nutritionist, explained that overweight refers to having more body weight than is considered healthy, usually indicated by a body mass index (BMI) equal to or greater than 25, while obesity involves excessive fat accumulation that poses health risks.
The survey further revealed that women living in urban areas are more likely to be obese, with 43% of urban women in the 20-49 age range reported as overweight or obese, compared to 39% in rural areas.
Odero expressed concern over the high obesity rates, emphasizing the need for solutions to address this growing issue.
Obesity increases the risk of chronic illnesses such as hypertension and diabetes, posing significant health challenges to the affected individuals.

Unhealthy eating habits, hormonal changes, and sedentary lifestyles were identified as contributing factors to obesity, particularly among women.
Odero also highlighted medical conditions, stress, depression, and certain medications as potential causes.
To combat the rising obesity rates, Odero recommended increasing physical activity and adopting healthy eating habits. These lifestyle changes can help reduce the prevalence of obesity and its associated health risks.
