Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta admitted to sleepless nights after losing key players to injury before Sunday’s north London derby against Tottenham.
Despite being without Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, and Riccardo Calafiori, Arteta praised his side for their gritty 1-0 win, secured by Gabriel’s second-half header.
Arteta noted the importance of adapting and doing the “ugly things” to win.
We had to adapt a little bit because of some of the players we lost,”
I prepared for Tottenham for five days, then in one moment I lost one player and in another I lost another.
I didn’t sleep much! There were no excuses, no crying.
The players have thick skin. They love the game. Sometimes to win you have to do the ugly things and they love to do that.
Arsenal’s strong set-piece performance, guided by specialist coach Nicolas Jover, was crucial.
The victory puts Arsenal second in the Premier League, ahead of a challenging schedule with their Champions League opener and a clash against Manchester City.
