Luminate’s 2023 Midyear Report reveals that the global music industry achieved a historic milestone by surpassing 1 trillion streams in the fastest time ever recorded in a calendar year.
This remarkable feat was accomplished in just three months, a full month faster than in 2022.

The report highlights a significant growth in global streams, which have surged by 30.8% compared to the previous year, showcasing the increasing prominence of the international music marketplace.

Interestingly, the study found that 40% of U.S. music listeners now enjoy music in non-English languages, including Afrobeats-; indicating a growing interest in diverse musical offerings.
Moreover, an impressive 69% of U.S. music listeners are enjoying music from artists originating outside of the United States, underscoring the global appeal of music from various cultural backgrounds.
The report highlights Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, Italian, German, and Arabic as the most popular languages for non-Anglophonic music among U.S. music listeners.

Latin genres and K-pop are leading the charge, gaining substantial popularity among the audience.
Jaime Marconette, Luminate’s senior director of music insights and industry relations, shared insights from their streaming data.
According to Marconette, Spanish and Korean language music are the most popular when considering the top 10,000 most streamed songs (audio and video combined) during the first half of 2023.
Additionally, Spanish-language music’s share of the top 10,000 has grown by 3.6% since 2021, while English-language music’s share has seen a decline of 4.2% in the same period.
