Afrobeats star Burna Boy was literally snubbed at the Grammy’s. Despite being nominated in two categories, the African giant left the prestigious biggest music night empty handed. A bad start for Afrobeats in 2023?
Love, Damini was one of the contenders for Best Global Music Album and his global-charting record “Last Last” was nominated for Best Global Music Performance,

Los Angeles was stormed by outstanding artists and personalities last Sunday, among them Africans like Tems who ended up winning her first Grammy – Africa was proud. Nigeria was hyped. Burna Boy and Tems were representing their country, who better than the two?
Nigerian music has won the hearts of not just Africans, but has an entire global audience.
2022 was a good year for Burna Boy. Last Last was an anthem, he filled international Arenas with sold out shows and his 6th studio album Love, Damini, released in July 2022, a follow-up to the Grammy-winning ‘Twice As Tall’ is nowhere near second rate. It featured guest appearances from Ladysmith Black Mambazo, J Hus, Vict0ny, Popcaan, Blxst, Kehlani, Ed Sheeran, J Balvin, & Khalid.

Fast forward to Sunday at the Grammys where “Last Last” lost Best Global Music Performance to “Bayethe,” a song by a South African artists Nomcebo Zikode, Zakes Bantwini and Wouter Kellerman while Japanese act Masa Takumi’s Sakura edged Love, Damini to clinch the Best Global Music Album award.
Burna Boy’s loss begs the question of why a song that seemingly has less impact worldwide trumped “Last Last.” This is not the first time Burna Boy or an African artist is let down at the Grammys. Wizkid lost to Arooj Aftab’s “Mohabbat.” last year at the Grammy’s. Not so much is known about that track or artist who was up against Wizkid’s “Made in Lagos” and “Essence”
So Burna Boy’s ‘Last Last’ lost Best Global Song Performance to ‘Bayethe’ by Wouter Kellerman, Zakes Bantwini & Nomcebo Zikode. First time hearing this song honestly

Twitter flooded with questions after Burna Boy’s loss at the Grammy’s. American rapper Diddy threw shade at him after he lost in both nominations. Apparently he won his last Grammy only because they worked together, but not this time. He took credit for the Afrobeats star’s first and only Grammy win. Diddy co-executive produced Burna’s 2020 album “Twice as Tall”. Together, they not only won the Best Global Music Album the following year but also topped the Billboard US World Albums chart.
