YBNL signee Asake has shed light on the inspiration behind adopting his mother’s name as his stage alias.
Addressing questions raised by about the feminine association of the name, Asake explained that his friends were responsible for the moniker’s adoption.
Asake expressed his comfort with the name, enjoying the surprise it brings when introduced on stage as people expect a female artist.
His musical journey is rooted in his upbringing, with a family history steeped in theater and the arts. He reminisced,
I fell in love with theatre as a child; my father used to be a singer and my mother dances a lot,
so it’s a family thing; although my parents didn’t do it professionally, they only did it for the fun of it.”
While Asake has a passion for dance, he admitted that the financial prospects in music motivated his transition.
The main reason why I left dance is for the love of money. I know I want to be very honest.
Dance is something that I love. I can’t even do without moving, but I feel like the kind of money I want, I’m not sure dance can give me,”
Nonetheless, he sees music and dance as complementary, believing that a music video without a dancer can be lacking in excitement.
