The verification process on Twitter and Elon Musk’s involvement in it have been subject to criticism recently.
Last week, Twitter started removing blue checkmarks from previously verified users, while some celebrities, such as LeBron James, received their verification through Musk’s intervention.
Musk had previously criticized Twitter’s verification system and suggested that users could pay for it. However, after Twitter’s blue check purge began, there have been reports of celebrities and even dead celebrities’ accounts receiving verification without payment.
It remains unclear whether these accounts were verified for free or if someone paid for them to remain verified.
Blue checkmarks have been given to the accounts of late celebrities such as Chadwick Boseman, Kobe Bryant, and Anthony Bourdain.
