Microsoft lays off 650 Xbox employees following new deal
Microsoft is reducing its Xbox games unit workforce by 650 employees, marking the third round of layoffs this year, according to Bloomberg.
This move follows the company’s $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard and is part of an effort to cut costs.
Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer indicated that the layoffs will mainly affect corporate and support roles, with no impact on studio operations or game projects.
Spencer also said that these changes are intended to position Microsoft Gaming for long-term success; according to a memo;
the shuffling will serve to allow Microsoft Gaming to organize our business for long term success.” – Spencer
Earlier this year, Microsoft had already cut nearly 2,000 jobs and shut down several studios, including Alpha Dog and Tango Gameworks.
